Plastic bag and boot trick!

This is not the most amazing trick in the book, but it can get you in and out of your rain pants in seconds! If your rain pants does'nt possess any access zips on the legs then one can use a plastic bag over ones boots to ease access. The texture of the plastic over the boot will allow your leg to slip through! Thats right, no more fumbling around in the wind and hopping like a grasshopper. One can use the plastic bag afterwards for boot storage in the car. The other option is to purchase a rain pants with side zips!

Right, now onto Womens - First up, the "swift" soft shell - now my thoughts on softshell need no repeating but i will anyway - it's the business - water repellent, windproof, fast drying, super breathable blah blah blah blah so good etc etc - seriously though, if you don't have a soft shell, sort it out.

Right -the lovely "Swift" soft shell. And here's the really good bit - it was €90 and is now €50!

Beneath the swift is the Kiwi Pro-Stetch trouser - light weight, stretchy, supremely comfortable trousers that dry ridiculously fast, have UV protection and a "wash and wear" treatment so they look good without needing to be ironed. were €65, now €30 - yes, that's less than half price.

And to finish, on your right is the nosi zip off trouser in "mushroom" - anti mosquito treatment, fast drying, choice of leg lengths and look great as well. €60 down to €40!!

Nothing beats a good auld hillwalk in the early morning to shake off the cobwebs! Before I started work today i headed to the Galtees in Tipperary. The day started with a walk up the trail to the scenic Lough Curra. We continued over Galtymore with fantastic views all around, then onto Galtybeg and down to the car. If you would like any information on the walk then pop into the shop and ask for Brian!

Kilimanjaro in the bag!

Down through the seven and a half years of me working in Mahers Outdoor there has been a hand full of jackets that i would call unbelievable. With the like of the Berghaus Sullivan, High trails, Trango and Pinnacle 3. The North Face has had their jackets like the Point Five, Down Pour and of course the Stratosphere.

From Mammut last season we had the Kiruna, it was so good we got it back in this year. But with a massive price comes a massive jacket.

What a jacket. This is a serious bit of kit, if you are the kind of person who goes to the mountain and the only thing you have in mind is putting on your helmet and harness roping up and tackling some ridge in the Reeks or the Wicklow mountains, just like Partick in the photo below, ok so we don't have a mountain we are using a stairs but pa wanted to dress up so we let him. So when we moved into the new shop i needed a light weight waterproof jacket. After much deliberation i decided to go with The North Face Upland jacket, since i bought it i have used it in heavy rain to drizzle and of course it has worked a treat.

The jacket its self has a tough outer and mesh lined inner which helps with the breathabilty and if you think thats not enough it has the pit zips under the arm to give massive ventilation. The hood is a solid piece great fit and as a person who just hates the idea of hoods with this jacket I really don't mind them.

Some New North Face gear

Here we see Patrick wearing some lovely new North Face gear. If we do say so ourselves very street wise, very street wise indeed. 1st on the list is the very smart, great fitted momentum fleece. coming in at 95 euro. This piece also comes in the oh so very popular colour of "johnny cash" black, but there is no need to put that photo in cause you know what it looks like.

Now up to swing is the North Face Drew Peak hoodie, what this really is, is a jumper with a hood and a big TNF logo. The advantage about this is that its cotton and not wool.

Nanga Parbat Expedition

Amongst our many customers here at Mahers, we have some very adventurous people - Going off on all kinds of trips that would leave you either very jealous or glad you weren't going because you couldn't cope with what they are going to do (or maybe that's just me being a wuss). This is "proper" mountaineering.

Nanga parbat (yeah, the photo on the right).

This, for me at least, falls in to the latter as it's one serious undertaking - One of the most dangerous mountains in the world, never before summitted in winter. Yes, that's right - it has never been summitted in winter - by anyone, ever. I think that says quite alot about what these guys are doing.

So before we get into the people, kit lists, itinerary etc, lets have a more detailed look at what they are to expect when they get to that big mountain in Pakistan. (Much of this is copied from summitpost.org so thanks to them for the info as my knowledge was fairly limited).

Nanga Parbat is located in the Northern Area of Pakistan and is the Western bastion of the Himalaya. It is the nineth highest mountain in the world and the second highest in Pakistan after K2. Steeped in a history matched by few others in Asia it has staged some of the greatest Himalayan ascents of all time. From Hermann Buhl’s solo first ascent in 1953 via the Upper North ridge to Gunther and Reinhold Messner’s first ascent of the Rupal Face in 1970 via the South South East Spur, Messner’s solo climb of the Diamir Face in 1978, and more recently Vince Anderson and Steve House’s Alpine-style ascent of the Central Pillar of the Rupal Face. These epic climbs continue to inspire climbers to attempt yearly what is considered to be the second hardest 8000m mountain after K2.

Nanga Parbat is, according to those who have seen her in person, a truly awesome spectacle. The south face is the largest in the world extending over four kilometres above base camp. I can only imagine what this must look like up close and personal - the photos i have seen online are awe inspiring enough.

To date there have only been five ascents from the south.

The north face is equally intimidating. In contrast to the south face’s steep rock and ice the snowy north face is guarded by a broad barrier of seracs that extend the width of the mountain. Climbers before the Second World War were convinced that the only way to climb the mountain was from the north via a long arc extending over Rakhiot Peak (7010m), between the two summits of Silberzacken and finally to the summit of Nanga Parbat thereby avoiding a more direct ascent of the north face. The route was dangerously prone to avalanche and exposed to bad weather. 31 people died attempting to climb the mountain leading to it acquiring the infamous name of the “Killer Mountain”.

Hermann Buhl’s summit route has only been repeated once (Slovak, 1971) to this day. His ascent marked only the third 8000m ascent after Annapurna I (1950) and Everest and was the only first summit of all the 8000ers to be done without oxygen and of course solo. Most attempts nowadays are via the Westerly Diamir face which is generally considered to be the easiest and safest with the Kinshofer Route the normal route. Nanga Parbat, as of 2005, had received 263 ascents by 261 individuals (Messner and SP Member Qudrat Ali have climbed it twice) at a price of 62 deaths. Sixteen women have summited the mountain. Numerous challenging lines still await. The most difficult is an ascent of Nanga Parbat via the unclimbed Mazeno Ridge which constitutes the longest ridge in the world. A number of expeditions have made ‘attempts’ on the mountain during winter but to no avail.

So that gives you all a little background on the mountain and the conditions these guys are likely to endure when attempting a winter ascent - We will return with more info in part two, covering the route they will be attempting, kit they will be using and a general itinerary starting from the flights out at the start of January.

It is well worth looking up some more info yourself as well as we haven't even scraped the surface of how bad conditions can get on Nanga Parbat and looking at detailed descriptions and of the routes makes for some fascinating reading.

If the Irish winter is getting you down and the rain is putting a stop to your climbing, then head south to Spain! With a vast array of climbing to choose from, every climber is catered for.

Our goal for this trip was to climb some of the knife ridges on offer. These included the ElRealet, Bernia and the Toix. Their home is in the Los Marinas mountains near Benidorm. If you want sun, good quality rock and spectacular views then this is the place.

We stayed in the Orange House in Finerstrat. It proved to be the ideal spot to base oneself. Car rental is good value and one can obtain flights at a reasonable price and with food being very cheap it proves to be a money saver!

Picos De Europa/ Camino talk with Michael Grainger.

On the 18th of October Mahers outdoor is proud to welcome Michael Grainger, who is a renowned walking guide, he has been spending alot of this time guiding people on the Camino and his new adventure is guiding people on Picos De Europa.

The Picos de Europa (literally: "Peaks of Europe", often abbreviated to the Picos) is a range of mountains 20 km inland from the northern coast of Spain, located in the Autonomous Communities of Asturias, Cantabria and Castile and León, forming part of the Cantabrian Mountains.

He will also be talking about the famous Santiago De Compostela. This will be a very popular talk as alot of people will very intrested in this trek. Thousands of people a year do it.

El Camino de Santiago (or The Way of St. James) is the pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, north west Spain, where legend has it that the remains of the apostle, Saint James the Great, are buried.

He will be in store on the 18th of October the talk will kick off at 6 30.

Make sure you get in for it cause it will a fantastic opportunity to pick his brains and get all the info you need.

Yes folks, the legends at Mahers Outdoor have moved in with their little brothers and sisters on Maylor Street. You can access us from either entrance (ooh err missus), those being our main entrance on Maylor Street or via out Optimus Prime Megatron Sports Megastore on Oliver Plunkett Street - that's the new official name for the sports store now that we have arrived.

We would like to thank our new neighbours for all of their help during the move - guys we owe you a pint - just the one though you lightweights. A special mention goes out to Brendon "The Yak" Dolan who at one point was seen carrying the entire downstairs part of the shop in one hand and a sausage roll in the other like some sausage roll eating man mountain -cheers Bren.

And as for our stable mates,the Fitness Store, well, what can i say - thanks for being so welcoming and not arguing over music choice (you know who you are). Also a big thanks to Patrick, our multi-talented, super handsome builder/climber/pole dancer (that was a special just for me wasn't it Patrick?).

It's shiny.

The man above is using his as a sledge in the middle of summer - he is an idiot but at least has a vivid imagination.

Obviously it's intended use is to keep you warm when you need it most - and having tried one i can tell you that in all seriousness, it is warm - very warm.

Here are the "proper" specs:

Made from "reflexcell" material, which blocks heat loss more effectively than any other emergency product.

Warmth of 8 togs - equivalent to medium weight sleeping bag.

Waterproof/Windproof.

Fits tall adults (i am one and i had plenty of room).

In all seriousness, this is a fabulous piece of kit for anything from an adventure race through to a planned bivouac - For emergency situations on or off the mountains even something as simple as being stuck out in the car for the night when it snows heavily.

Anyway, it's only €40 and it could save your life - for the cheapskates amongst you it also comes in bag form for only €26 - that could still save your life but you'll still be cheap.

Back to school - woohoo!

Yes it's that happy time of year when you have to get up early again, not lark around all day having fun and generally go back to learning rubbish that will do you no good in your later years. Just kidding, it's all super useful information that will be invaluable in your every day lives so pay attention kids as "what you learn today could save your life tomorrow" - that's a quote fom chuck norris (i think).

Anyway as you have to go back, you might as well be dry, well fed and watered and with somewhere to put all that food, water and reading material.

Keeping dry:

New "Thunderflash" waterproof jacket/fleece combo - The business if you want to be dry - or dry and warm at the same time - While the weather is like it is at the moment (i.e. warm ;-), just use the waterproof shell on it's own and when the days get cooler, a zip-in fleece will keep you toasty.

We've only got the boys one of these at the moment but the girls one should with us in a week or so (not definite but should). Loads of the packaway stuff came in in all sizes too but it won't be here forever - move it.

Would sir like to look cool in his rainwear?

Yes,.. well then step this way.

Keeping watered:

As under 18's, you can't legally drink the fineness that is alcoholic liquor but rest assured your time will come and it will be excellent - In the meantime, don't look like someone that has had too much alcohol and spilt it all over their pants - get yourself a spill proof Contigo water bottle and make the opposite sex swoon at your stylish bottle as you sip from it like some jazz cat from funky town (that's cool, trust me).

"Wow, who's that cat in the hat looking phat" - that's what they'll be saying about you, yes you when you get your contigo bottle.

They make travel mug/flask type things too - they all have easy drinking holes, like a good disposable coffee cup only made of plastic and with a button to release or stop liquid flow so no more mr pissy pants look for you - man the stuff they think of these days.

Ooh, is that a flask or a travel mug - actually it's both, i'm an "A-lister" don't you know.

Yeah i know, massive pictures messing up the flow of the blog - shut it, the details are good now with my massive pics and i don't care for your back chat.

Eating:

Sporks - yeah, you know them - it's a spoon, fork and knife all in one - should be called a spoknifork i reckon - would sound cooler too. Still even with the rubbish name they work well and are pretty cool too - if you were to turn up at a film premiere somewhere wearing a thunderflash jacket with a spork in one hand and contigo travel mug/flask full of whiskey, i'd let you jump the queue - then again i probably wouldn't be working the door there cos i hate those things and they probably wouldn't employ me either after last time.

More eating: - No not you tubs, put that down and get back on the treadmill.

Looking for something to keep your lunch in? - No, what do you mean no - you want to scrape your lunch off the bottom of your bag do you - idiot - now listen up - put your lunch in one of these and it will stay fresh and safe for months - not really, maybe a day or two, depends what you got in there. Anyway, put your lunch in this, take it out later (lunchtime would be good) and eat your lunch from it - it's that simple.

This thing, here, on the right - yeah that's the one - the green box - with "little tubs's lunch" written on the lid. yeah, that's your's tubby.

In a shop far far away there was once a man who had a dream, a dream so big it was almost unthinkable. But when you are one of us you grab the bull by the horns and ride, you stay on it ' til you win cause that's what winners do. Thats what a Mahers outdoor staff member does.
Andys dream was to be a robot, after months in the planning with millions of yen gone into the materials, thousands maybe millions of man hours gone into this robotic plan. At this stage we must thank Tony Stark from Stark industries for his support.

At some time during the procedure i nearly cut his arm off with a lazer cutter but thats a different story all together.
Finally we got it sorted and all was good. Andy is now "ANDEX". We hooked him up with major weapons like the power to fix bikes and do a lot of research on the computer on useless things but the most important thing is to fetch coffee for us. We managed to get a shot on our SLR camera before he took off on his holidays i think he is in Dubai or Kerry/Bantry. If you see him grab a couple of photos of his trip.

I hope his wife is proud of him

They have issued a full recall of all Petzl GriGri 2's.
They general jist of it is;
"PETZL has discovered that exerting excessive force on the fully extended handle of the GRIGRI 2can cause internal damage, such that the handle may become stuck in the open position. Petzl is not aware of any accidents resulting from this. Petzl has increased the mechanical strenght of the handle on all GRIGRI2's since serial number 11137."

I''ll give you a little bit of info on the cycle gear, at the moment we have a great deal if you buy the top and the shorts they will only come to a mere 50 euro.

THATS RIGHT A MERE 50 EURO.

The cycle top is a fairly awesome cycle top as normal ones apply it has the pocket in the back for energy bars, radio, water bottles, tubes and other bits and pieces.

I know its not a massive deal but they do have some nice colours on them to make you look bike street wise.

The shorts are normal bike shorts with a nice tight fit. The great thing about the shorts is the padding for the extra comfort is built in with coolmax so it wicks the sweat away at a fairly rapid pase.

Sheep - The evolutionary story.

Evolution rules - Sheep live in special climate where temperatures go from very cold in winter to very hot in summer - sheep evolve special wool that deals with all these conditions, allowing sheep to stay warm when cold and cool when too hot - we steal wool from said sheep and turn it into clothing of varying thicknesses for different times of year to make it even more effective for us - And there you go, we have merino wool from Smartwool.

This stuff really is the business - In my case it takes weeks of wear for it to develop even the slightest whiff of body odour (but then i smell real nice) - In fact i personally gave up (not washing it) after 5 weeks (3-4 wears per week) with no whiff - it will smell eventually but it makes it great stuff for multiple day/week hikes/bike rides etc and it means that with it getting washed less often it should last longer as well.

Anyway, i love the stuff and so will you if you give it a go.

Mahers staff tent of the month

So after much debate and deliberation but no fisty cuffs, we have decided that the tent of the season is the Vango Icarus 500. This fantastic five man tent that is fairly easy to erect, ten to twenty minutes and its up - with three of the same size poles so you can't get confused,it's one of the most comfortable tents that you can get for family weekend or week camping . The waterproofing on the material is 3000m hydrostatic head (very waterproof).

One of the greatest things about this tent is the porch space is so massive that you could have a Mini festival in it. With a bath tub groundsheet this makes the ease of sitting down after a hard day of camping!!! and not worrying about streams of water running through the tent and you running around the porch like a lu la trying to lift things off the floor trying to keep everything dry.

When it comes to height in a tent with me its usually me bending my neck walking around tents (being six foot four it happens a fair bit in tents) but with the Icarus i don't have to do this at all which is fantastic cause at times it gets annoying so two thumbs up at that.

The pack size of the tent is a normal size - there is nothing amazing about it. Weight wise it comes in at 13.7 kg (not to bad)

One of the greatest things about the Icarus 500 is that on a extremely windy day/night what the tents offers is a tension band system (tbs) which straightens the poles making your tent much stiffer so it doesn't move.

So beautiful-oh beautifu-ul.

Yes the purple dude had it right when he wrote that song - which was all about teva shoes - he admitted as much in a recent interview. Behold their majesty and glory.

Gnarkosi -grrrrrr (that's one of the womens on the left, others below). Yes i know i've broken my 1st rule and shown you too much (both colours in both mens and womens!) but i'm feeling generous because i've been waiting for these beauties to cross our doorstep for a long time (as many of you have). Oh man, they are a good looking shoe - built for wake skating and other watersports but i'll be wearing mine just to look like the coolest kid on the block. Which of course i am and will continue to be until you get some cooler shoes than me - then you can come and "serve" me but until that day you may as well stay at home cos my Gnarkosi's will rock your world.

Right - Mens Gnarkosi in a lovely colour called Mandrills nose/Butternut squash racket.

The fit as, as always with Teva, is spot on for most people - nice and roomy at the front with a heel oh so secure it makes me feel really safe.

Footwear and clothing companies like to attribute daft names to colours so i'm going to make my own up for all of these - if you don't like them that's ok, i will enjoy it in my tiny mind.

Right - A Mandrill

Ooh la la - womens in wizards gold/baboon anus. Yes i know, two simian references - it's just coincedence, don't be getting any ideas.

Another mens Gnarkosi - only this time in tarmac pie with apple and lime jus.

Mens Riva low - leather and leather.
And brown. This shoe does it all - except peel fruit for you (if you're a "peeler").

"Toachi" - pronounced "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me". Colour shown is turbot skin/old orange peel.

Nice sandals though.

"Churn" womens - a shoe for the water but you can use it for other stuff if you like - it likes it - just don't go thinking you can climb Carrauntoohill in them (that's a mountain)- oh and the colour is pavement/neon shallots/flange .

Above - Mens "Riva mid" like the Riva low but with a little more height - hence the "mid" monicker (that's like a pair of knickers only there's only one and not a pair). Colour shown is poo brown/dry poo black (it's not always white you know).

Womens "Tirra" sandal - designed for water use and surprisingly enough (as a womens sandal), the marketing informs us that it was "specifically designed for a womans foot" - well, well, wonders never cease do they. Looks nice when you're not in the water too.

The massive bulk of Mangerton looms ahead

Spreading out over the North Cork and Kerry skyline like a dinosaurs backbone is the Iveragh Ridge. It is part of a much larger ridge system which extends from the Knockmealdowns to the majestic Skellig Islands. To walk this ridge would take a couple of weeks. Not having the luxury of that time scale, Brian and Myself opted to start from Millstreet and walk from there south to Caherdaniel. This would involve over 60 miles of hiking and over 6000 metres ascent. To accomplish such a feat one needed good fitness and navigational skills, but most importantly a sick sense of humour!

We have the Luxury version of the Berghaus "Jalan" travel bag, cleverly called the "Jalan Lux" in both mens and womens, down from €200 to €150 - and this bag is the nuts.

Going travelling or want a more practical holiday bag than that stupid suitcase with heavy wheels you have - get this bag - it's lighter, tougher and cooler and you will be a better person if you have one.

Small children walk too slowly - yeah it's harsh but they annoy me with their tiny little steps and general malingering.

Now that was obviously a joke and you're not gonna just leave them on their own in the middle of town/the mountains just because they can't keep up so here is the answer.

Little Life Child carriers - As cool as cool can be and practical to the end - will carry children from 6 months to 3 years of age - any child of over 3 wanting to be carried everywhere has serious issues anyway. The smaller of the 2, the "Ultralight Convertible" (pictured right) has a massive front pocket which will hold 12 lites of stuff and will carry a total of 15kgs no bother.

The larger of the 2, the "Cross Country S2" (pictured left) will take 20 litres of stuff and a total weight of 20kg.

Thats it for those - they are badass, if you have small kids get one and don't look back.

Now, for the kids themselves, the coolest bags in town are back in town. I like to put mine on and pretend i'm a different kind of animal superhero every day.

Wherever you are travelling, it's a good idea to keep stuff safe, especially your head (and money/passports etc) - wearing a helmet just for travelling is gonna make you look like a mentalist - and not the good sort like Keith Barry. If you happen to be partaking in an activity that requires such protection then we do sell helmets so buy one.

Now if you are some kind of skilled hunter-gatherer you may not need money but for the rest of us it comes in useful fo buying food and stuff, to save us from getting too skinny or massively dehydrated, two highly unpleasant activities. Also, if you are Carlos the Jackal or Jason Bourne, you may have many passports and not have to worry if you lose one/it gets stolen/a monkey sets it on fire. Again, for the rest of us, a lost passport/other important documents can be potentially really troublesome.

So, what ya gonna do? - Buy something that doesn't cost much but is easily concealable, super durable, slash proof (that means it can't be cut by some slimy pick pocket type and whisked away without your knowing - and believe me this can happen easier than you would think!). The waist pack above right is all these things and more.

We now have a range of products from Pacsafe which are just what you need for your travels, whether a weekend break in Europe to long term travel in South America and the Middle and Far East.

The rucksack cover/lock up device you see on the left is just plain awesome - you almost want to stick a note on your bag saying "come on then, try it". Now obviously if you leave your bag attached to a lamp-post in central La Paz/London/Dublin for 2 days, it might not still be there upon your return - but we are talking deterrents here, not concrete bomb proof shelters - you couldn't carry one of those with you now could you.

Oh yes i am - see my fire.

This wicked piece of kit is the Go System "base camp" expedition stove - see that fire, it's so hot that kierans eye's are melting and his horns have grown bigger than ever. I know, i know, you thought they were evil eyes but the truth is that Kieran is a cyborg and his metal eyes are just that hot they have turned red - turn that damn thing off man!, we need your android style skills a little while longer.

That very same fire could be cooking your steak and onions right now - for 10 of you - in 30 seconds - no sherbet sherlock, this thing is fast. It will also take such a massive pot/wok/ griddle on top of it, you can cook for a decent size group - if there's more of you, take 2 - or 3 - that's the beauty of it, they pack up smaller than a swans face.

But to be fair its kieran here stepping into andy's blog cause he is going crazy with this one.

Columbia - the clothing not the country

So much stuff, so little space on the screen to show it all to you.

We have had rather alot of new Columbia stuff in recently, all of it rather dapper - These shoes, for example, are not only a fine gentlemans shoe suitable for trail running and walking they also look mighty fine when you are out on the town doing your thing, whatever that may be.

It's called the Master of Faster which, let's be honest is not the coolest name they could have come up with - Blaster of Pasta would have been way better but who cares, the shoes you have on now probably have some daft name that you are not even aware - lots of things have stupid names - cars, bikes, even children - but that doesn't stop us from loving them now does it. does it?

Once you put these babies on there is no going back - just come and try some on, feel them in your hands, love them, walk in them, run in them, feel them again - yeah you like that don't you.

For the girls there is this beauty, the new Switchback 2 - now there's a shoe name - sounds like it would cut your arms off if you even suggested it wasn't light and fast - which it is, obviously - and super comfy, Columbia really have nailed their fit recently and you WILL agree with me on this once you have tried them on. Sweet colours and waterproof too - oh yeah.

There are 5 or 6 other new styles of Columbia footwear split across mens and womens but i've still got clothing to cover so you can go jump if you think i'm putting up pictures and descriptions of them all. They are all dead comfy, swift looking and more than fit for purpose so as i've said before, come and see us, try them on, you know you want to.

We also got loads of lovely clothing and again, as much as i know you want to see it all, that's not gonna happen - come on, you should know the game by now - i'll show you some, you come and see us and we'll show you the rest.

Right - Surefire womens softshell - not the best picture but the only large one i could find. It looks much tastier in real life. below left is the "swifty seeker" tank top/vest and the "psyche to hike" shirt/blouse thing.

We did get some mens clothing as well so here's some of it.

Silver ridge shirts - we got short sleeve, long sleeve, brown, grey and beige/pebble/sand/whatever you want to call that beige colour. We also got silver ridge shorts and trousers which are real nice - lightweight, fast drying and with upf factors 30 to 50 so no sunburn for you guys - skintastic. The trousers zip off to make shorts - kapow, 2 trousers in 1 - the shirts have double collars to protect your neck from the sun too -man they think of everything. Here they are in all their glory.

Oh and here's a nice waterproof jacket for only €95. There is also a sweet softshell but you are just gonna have to come see us/it.

That's it, job done, come see us and we'll dress you up in all this stuff like our own little doll/plaything - yeah you will love it - and so will we.

tiny yet massive day pack

What packs up smaller than a pin head then gets like, 20,000 times bigger to make a 20 litre daypack that is extremely light and tough - don't know, well then let me tell you young pedawan - It's called the Sea to Summit ultrasil daypack and it kicks your and my ass.

Actually it packs up to about the size of a rabbits fist (you know, when they fight and stuff) and really is 20 litres when expanded - perfect for us fellas when it's too warm for a top or jacket with pockets and you don't want to be dragging that new gucci handbag around with you - just stick this in your pocket and forget about it, that is until you need it then kapow!, pull it out and wave it around cos you just saved the day captain bagface. Oh yeah and girls can use it too.

Yo, word up and all that.

Now that none of us can afford to go on foreign holidays anymore, maybe we will start appreciating what we have on our doorsteps - yes, we got carried away and forgot that the Irish hills and coastline are more beautiful than high rise flats in a town full of nightclubs that just happens to have a bit of sun (which our skin can't handle anyway). Now, seeing as we've woken up to that fact, the only way forward is "comfortable" camping. Unless you are backpacking or on a lightweight overnighter, big tents with tables, chairs, lights, a proper cooker and a cooler bag full of beer are the way to go.

Heaven.

Hell.

Anyway, enough ranting, let me introduce the gear.

Vango table and stool set. Only €85. nice.

Gelert Gas stoves:

Single burner - compact, cheap and does the business.

Compact double - got this myself - solid - get the coffee on the go on one hob while your bacon is cooking away on the other. You want eggs with that? - all good. Also has grill - good for toast to go with my world famous fried eggs. This is part of the tradition.

Double burner with grill - panels at the side for wind protection - solid and also part of the tradition.

This not part of the the tradition.

What is that anyway? - it looks like it should be in one of thse mesh bags with a perch next to it. Sporks are for stabbing bacon or sausages then lifting it/them to your mouth. This person has it all wrong.

Yo - some wicked new tents came in from Vango - they are cool and so am i cos i just bought the one above - It's a lot bigger than it looks in the picture above (obviously, otherwise you would have to be the size of a wasp to enjoy it) and there are only two of us sleeping in it - just imagine all that space to lie around in drinking beer and rolling around on the hallway carpet (not like that you dirty minded monkeys). Yes there is a carpet available too(bought separately) and it's solid (that means really good). It's plenty waterproof, fire retardant and only €260 so you have to buy one unless you are daft.

We also now have some smaller tents in such as the Beta 250, 350 and 450 (2, 3 and 4 person respectively and €100, €130 and €150). These are good solid tunnel tents with decent storage space and very waterproof grounsheets.

The new Banshee 200 (a very nice red colour - see pic below) and 300 (classic dark green) coming in at €130 and €150 - This tent is serious value for money as it is very lightweight and has a new 5000mm flysheet and 6000mm groundsheet (even better than last years spec which was more than good enough for our climate).

We now have big reductions on the lowe Alpine "Matrix" rucksacks - They are down from €50 to just €30!!

The packs are 24 litre and are the right shape/have enough room for college folders, school books, dead animals you have just run over on your bike and want to hide/eat etc, etc.

There is a top pocket for an ipod or some other form of personal music system (do walkmans still exist?, i'm not exactly "down with the kids" these days), a padded front compartment which would probably hold an ipad or small notebook and even has pen holders and small pockets to keep your bits and bobs in.

Whether you come from the Lance (that's Armstrong, you know the dude who won the Tour De France a couple of times so he must be pretty quick) school of dress code or the Grant Petersen (He has designed some of the finest "real" bikes on the planet today and runs the fabulous "Rivendell Bicycle Works") school of no dress code whatsoever, we have cycling kit for you. Personally I think there's something to be said for a bit of each, depending on your situation and style of riding.

For the Lance's among you (see pic above), we have a great new range of everything from base layers with rear pockets (for drinks, energy bars, gels etc) to lovely thin windproof tops that really are very breathable - these are one of my favourite items of "cycle clothing" as they keep the chill off you without making you sweaty underneath - simple, practical and inexpensive. All of the kit has a "cycling" cut, meaning slim fit so as to avoid any unwanted wind resistance -And with a lower rear to the clothing to keep your kidneys warm when in a more aerodynamic position.

Also now in stock are padded shorts, padded tights, non-padded Ron Hill trousers (both with and without stirrups) and some fantastically light waterproof jackets that pack up smaller than your fist (and they are in suitable bright colours with reflective strips for city and night riding). We also have some great "sealskinz" waterproof gloves with a nice bit of padding to make things more comfortable on our rough roads.

For those in the Rivendell School (see pic below for fairly "standard" dress code)we have Craghoppers shirts - yes, button up shirts - they are great for warm weather cycling as they have great ventilation in the form of loose sleeves and gaps between buttons - you won't win any races in them but you can go straight from bike to pub/coffee house.

Also in are merino baselayers and zip off hiking trousers which are actually fantastic for cycling in as when the sun comes out or you just get warmer from all the exertion, voila, the trousers become shorts! Ron Hill trousers cross over into this area as they are a kind of loose cycling tight (if that makes any sense - not skin tight but a great comfortable fit) and very subtle looking so great for winter training for the racers and great for all round use by everyone else.

Here's a lovely North face fleece for when she's cleaning the house or dropping the kids off at the pool.

Oh yes - As i sit here drinking (still) hot coffee having made it eight and a half hours ago, i can say with certainty that lifeventure flasks are solid, the foschnizzle or whatever the kids say these days. I've had a few flasks over the years and this is by far the best - it also looks and feels very tough so i'm sure it won't be needing replacing for a long long time.

As Ewan would say, "I love it".

New North Face rucksacks.

Simples - we have 3 new North face rucksacks.

Surge (pic right): A super tough, 33 litre rucksack with a a good number of different sized comparments including a dedicated laptop compartment, secondary compartment with organisation and a front side electronics compartment also with organisation.

There are other spaces too including a zippered pocket especially for your laptop power cord + transformer. It also has lovely stretchy side pockets, extremely tough looking zips and padded hip straps.

This bag really is the business - it's not cheap at €100 but it will last you a long time and is capable of everything from being a hill walking pack through to being a weekend travel bag and everyday work/college bag. It really has to be checked out to appreciate the quality of it.

Next up are the terra 35 and 45.

The 35 (pictured right) is an ideal large day bag or small overnighter. The finish is superb, with very comfortable shoulder straps and a great mesh/airflow type channel on the back panel to reduce "sweaty back" syndrome. As with all of the North Face bags, the finish quality is superb, with super strong materials being used and high quality zips.

The 45 has the same build quality and many of the same features of the 35 only it also has a long side zip entrance to the main compartment. Obviously this bag is suitable for multi-day adventures with it's 45 litre capacity.

And last, but by absolutely no means least comes the "Animas" (pic below).

This 12 litre, "do anything you like" pack is my personal favourite as this will carry enough for a day out hiking, cycling, climbing etc and remain very sleek indeed. It comes with a 3litre Source hydration system included and as with all of the packs above, the quality of this pack just has to be seen - Once again the stitching, zips, layout of compartments, stretchy side pockets and all the little details are bang on.

The Regatta/Dare2Be kit we are seeing for this spring is some of the nicest we have seen yet. With hooded softshells, hooded softshell gilets, light weight softshell trousers and some lovely base layers (including cycling base layers with that nice drop at the rear of the garment for keeping your kidneys warm when in a lower, more aggressive position). This really is a great range of clothing at very decent prices indeed, especially when you see the quality of this kit up close.

(Pictured right is the "Dreamlife" hooded womens softshell). Only €40!

You may have noticed quite a few mentions of softshell lately and that's quite simply because it's great stuff - I know I've waxed lyrical about it before but that's because softshell is water repellent and wind resistant (the better the weave the more so), as well as being extremely breathable. Some even have a full on "windstopper" membrane to make them completely windproof and some have gore-tex waterproof membranes (although personally this for me defeats the whole object of softshell - each to their own though).

All of this makes for an extremely practical piece of kit that means you can have protection from the elements while the inside of your kit remains almost perspiration free - Obviously if it's cats and dogs you will still need your hard shell but the rest of the time, let your softshell do it's thing.

We also have a very nice super lightweight windproof jacket that would be particularly suitable for cycling and running as well as summer days in the hills.

New North Face Point Five Jacket. Solid

Just look at it. In the words of the 70's/80's band Exile - "I want to kiss you all over, all over and over again, till the night closes in".

The Point Five also happens to be a superb mountaineering jacket, ideally suited to alpine climbing and expeditions with it's 3 layer Gore-Tex Pro-Shell being extremely tough and abrasion resistant as well as highly breathable.

Everything you would expect it to have, it has -from very good water resistant zips with internal storm flaps, pockets where you need them and a helmet compatible hood (both climbing and ski helmet compatible). The peak in particular is fantastic and as usual with The North Face, all of the finishing is top notch.

So it's wicked, that's it, come and buy one.

Yes, it's finally started arriving!

First off is the new "Aurora" 100 weight Polartec full zip fleece (see right in pink). With lovely detailing all round, stretchy side panels and cuffs and a great warmth to weight ratio, function and fashion are both covered in this lovely fleece. Also available in black.

Also in the ladies fleeces is the new "Sky Trail" tka 100 weight fleece. Once again this is full zip as many of you have been asking for the 100 weight fleeces with a full zip - well here they are. The "Sky Trail" has lovely stretchy thumb loop cuffs and has a very nuice fitted shape to it. Available in bright pink or black.

We have new colours in the fantastic "Upland" Jacket in both mens and womens as well as some new colours in our old favourite, the "Resolve" jacket. Both of these jackets are extremely good value, coming in at €135 and €100 respectively, both are very good waterproof shells. with the upland just having a tougher, more abrasion resistant outer fabric.

We also have a new coolmax ladies baselayer (below). The fabric of this piece feels very nice, like a soft animal, maybe a chinchilla.

And last but by no means least, a new, improved "Hedgehog" shoe in both Mens and Womens. The looks are the same but with new colours, an improved tread design and a new heel design (to increase snugness around the heel) the hedgehog is better than ever. I would love to show you a pic of it but it's so new there aren't any available yet!

I recently wrote a short blog on the jacket you see on the right and was unable to find a picture showing just how beautiful the colour is.

Anyway, i found two beautiful looking boys to wear the jacket for me and they let me take photos of them as well (as long as i took them out to buy some sweets later on). One of the boys was handsome, as you can see and the other one had a very hairy face and a massive hat on to hide his dome like head.

So that's that, the jackets great, the boys are lovely and we had a real nice time.

The handsome one is still single for some reason, i don't know why.

Finally back in stock!

This item has been one of the most frequently requested over the past month or so so we are chuffed to have them back in. It's one of the most practical every day pieces of kit that we stock and anyone that has owned one will know how much use they get.

Anyway, there's not much to say about the spectrum fleece vest other than it's great quality, decently priced and everyone should own one. Oh and they are only €45.

Hi de ho as one of my favourite tv characters would say.

Today we are looking at the womens "Ortler" pant, a fantastic lightweight softshell trouser.

These are a 3 season, water repellent trouser that have great ventilation zips on the legs, not that you'll need them very often as these trousers are completely breathable, virtually windproof and dry extremely fast if they do get wet. They come in a variety of leg lengths and look very smart on.

There's really not much else to say - they are great trousers for all year round use.

Along with softshell it's my favourite material in outdoor clothing - I'm not going to go into all the details of why as most of you probably already know and if you don't then you'll just have to come in to see it and find out from us why it is so good.
